Emergency

The UKBB emergency unit treats children and adolescents with slight to serious injuries and illnesses round the clock. Specialists from all important areas work in the Children's Hospital. This ensures optimal treatment and care.

What to do in a Child Emergency?

  • First of all, phone your pediatrician.
  • If you cannot reach them, contact the emergency call centre at the number: T +41 61 261 15 15. There they will know who is deputising for your paediatrician and can give you recommendations on how to proceed.
  • Alternatively, for medical advice and information you can call the chargeable UKBB Helpline at the number: 0900 712 712 (3.23 CHF / min. from the Swiss landline, possibly additionally 8 Rp. / min. in the waiting loop by network operator) or 0900 712 713 (3.12 CHF / min. for calls from prepaid cell phones, possibly additionally 8 Rp. / min. in the waiting loop by network operator).
  • You can also come directly to the UKBB emergency unit.

When should you call an ambulance?
When your child is in a bad state: for example, suffering from shortage of breath and/or loss of consciousness, or has been badly burned, alert the ambulance service at telephone number: 144.

Accompanying Children to the Emergency Ward

The children's emergency ward is often very busy. A child should be accompanied to the emergency ward by no more than two persons. Thank you for your cooperation.

Protection of Children and Adolescents

The Universitäts-Kinderspital beider Basel can provide help, protection and safety in the event of acute risk to infants, children and adolescents.

The UKBB is one of the contact points for the protection of children and adolescents of the Basel-City and Basel-County Cantons, and as such is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 

Association for Pediatrics Regio Basel

The emergency service of practicing doctors in child and adolescent medicine from Basel-City and Basel-County works in close cooperation with emergency staff on the UKBB emergency unit. Every Thursday from 4 pm to 10 pm, every Friday from 6 pm to 10 pm, and every weekend (and public holiday) from 8 am to 10 pm, children and adolescents are assigned at reception to either the Emergency Paediatric Service or the UKBB emergency unit, according to the severity of the illness.
