When their own child is lying in hospital, many
parents start worrying: Are the personal wishes and views of the family accounted
for? And who is responsible for providing us with comprehensive information
on my child’s care?
In order to protect the rights of children and adolescents in hospital, the UKBB conforms to the requirements and guidelines set forth in the Charter for Children in Hospital of the European Association for Children in Hospital (EACH).
Since 1988, the EACH Charter has regulated the rights of children before, during and after a hospital stay on a supranational basis. The principles of the EACH Charter are based on the UN Convention on Children's Rights. The member organisations of EACH – in Switzerland, this is the Verein Kind und Spital (Association for Child and Hospital) – require the optimal medical treatment as a fundamental right for children. There exists a close collaboration between the Universitäts-Kinderspital beider Basel and the Verein Kind und Spital in Basel.
Over 25 years ago, on 20th November, the UN Convention on Children's Rights was adopted. Since then, the International Children's Rights Day has been celebrated in many countries in the world. The UKBB also celebrates this day every year, providing information on the rights of children and promoting the notion that their opinions count.
As an interdisciplinary specialist group, the Child Protection Group provides counselling quickly and un-bureaucratically to children and their relatives, if there is reason to suspect child abuse (doesn’t this already incorporate sexual?) or neglect
