Care Team

Treatment teams are not always able to provide care for parents and relatives unexpectedly confronted with tragedy.  For this reason, the UKBB established a care team in 2011.  The care team supports families of patients in critical situations while – at the same time – easing the burden on the medical treatment team.

The involvement of the care teams takes place in consultation with the parents and the attending doctors and nursing staff. Their work is coordinated via the Head of Care Management. The care team is interdisciplinary in nature and specially trained in this line of work.

Scope of Responsibilities

  • Supporting relatives in critical situations (serious accidents, illnesses and deaths)
  • Supporting siblings and, as necessary, providing age-appropriate explanations in relation to injury, illness and death
  • Supporting the parents in arranging their individual, cultural and religious needs as well as in the exercising of their rituals in the case of death
  • Providing information on the organisational procedures and assistance in completing formalities. Supporting in the organising of a possible repatriation in the event of death
  • Support and counselling of UKBB staff who do not yet have a lot of experience in accompanying a seriously injured, seriously ill or dying child / adolescent and their relatives
  • Co-organisation of follow-up discussions with the treatment team
