Visceral neonatal surgery is both a clinical and research specialism at UKBB. The care begins even before the birth, with an interdisciplinary consultation with specialists from gynaecology and neonatology as well. During the birth, measures are taken to ensure the survival of the child with severe malformations. After the necessary surgical reconstructions, the UKBB surgical team continues to support each newborn as part of a long-term care strategy.
UKBB's visceral neonatal surgeons specialised in the treatment of rare congenital disorders. These include all obstructive disorders of the oesophagus and intestine (e.g. absence or narrowing of the oesophagus, small intestine or anus), abdominal wall defects (e.g. omphalocele or gastroschisis) as well as diaphragmatic hernias or lung malformations. UKBB's internationally renowned and highly specialised team collaborates with experts from different countries and offers all therapeutic options based on the latest scientific knowledge.
The scientific focus is on congenital diseases of the intestinal tract, such as Hirschsprung's disease and short bowel syndrome. In cooperation with UKBB's paediatric gastroenterologists, a programme for the rehabilitation of the limited function of the gastrointestinal tract is being established. UKBB is therefore filling a noticeable gap in Switzerland's existing healthcare facilities.
