Dr Delgado-Eckert began his career at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, where he earned a master's degree in mathematics with a minor in physics. After working as a mathematical modelling consultant at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, he moved to the USA. He conducted the research for his doctorate at Virginia Tech and Tufts University Medical School in Boston.

He obtained his PhD in 2008 and then moved to Switzerland to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). In 2012, he started a position as research group leader at the University Paediatric Hospital of the University of Basel.
