Occupational therapy at the UKBB offers group training for kindergarten and school children aged 5 to 13 years with concentration difficulties. A child with concentration difficulties finds it difficult to direct their attention to a situation.

This may mean that the child is struggling:

  • to turn to a specific matter
  • Stick with it, especially when there is little motivation
  • To block out unimportant things and therefore not be distracted
  • complete the task within a reasonable time

Training basics

  • Marburg concentration training (MKT) according to Krowatschek
  • Attentioner training according to Petermann
  • Basic and strategy training according to Lauth and Schlottke

Above all, the child learns about different strategies that can help them to concentrate more consciously on one thing. Further goals are:

  • Increasing self-control and independence
  • Planful, systematic processing of tasks
  • Increasing the ability to concentrate in different areas of attention
  • Dealing sensibly with errors
  • Increase in performance motivation
  • Confidence in your own abilities
  • Strengthening parents and improving parent-child interaction

Training components

The concentration training consists of:

  • Training for the child (6 - 8 sessions depending on age)
  • and an obligatory parents' evening

The training is designed as group training. Training with other children allows children to learn from each other.

Training in a group has various advantages over individual training. For example, many children show abnormalities in the group, whereas they may be completely unremarkable in an individual situation with an adult. Similar to school classes, group training is never completely quiet. The children learn to be less distracted by external stimuli.

A parents' evening is organised to accompany the training. Here, parents are given the basics of the training and general information on the topics of concentration, attention and learning. The parents' evening is an obligatory part of the training programme so that the training content can be implemented in everyday life. The children's teachers are welcome to attend the parents' evening.
