The paediatric radiology department at UKBB is currently upgrading its MR unit to the latest state of the art. The upgrade brings challenges, but is worth it - not least for the patients. For example, children need to lie in the tube for less time than before to get better images.
From 7 June 2021, the radiology department at UKBB will be undergoing a three-week renovation of the MR room. This will involve the MR device an upgrade to the latest state of the art. The software for the device is also being updated. The magnet and gradient coil, which were only recently replaced, will continue to be used.
With the upgrade of the MR device, the image quality in particular has taken another quantum leap forward. This opens up new possibilities for diagnosis, especially as the examination is even faster than before. Patients will also benefit from this: in future, they will need to lie in the tube for less time because the scanning process will be shorter.
Until then, however, there are still some challenges to overcome, as Anka Fiebig, Head Radiology Specialist at UKBB, explains. She is in charge of the radiology project and is pleased that the UKBB will be able to carry out its MR examinations at the University Hospital Basel (USB) during the renovation work. "However, we slightly underestimated the scepticism of parents when their child is examined by adults over there," says Anka Fiebig. "We then have to explain to them with a lot of empathy that our staff specialising in children will still be on site to carry out the examinations. Only then is everyone usually reassured and we can do our actual work."
Anka Fiebig also sees this temporary move to the USB as an enrichment. The collaboration works extremely well. "Of course, the dialogue with colleagues from adult medicine is also very exciting. And it really motivates me when I see how much respect they have for our work with the children," says Anka Fiebig. Most of her team are therefore looking forward to the next three weeks.
The project is not yet complete with the conversion. A two-week phase will follow, during which the upgraded MR device will be started up and programmed and the new processes will have to settle in. However, an initial volume of examinations will then be able to be carried out again in the UKBB MR room.
The new MR device will finally be fully operational from 12 July. And by this time at the latest, the secret of what fantasy world the MR room will have been transformed into will also be revealed.
