Insurance & costs

With the exception of emergency admissions, parents must arrange the cost coverage for their child's hospitalisation with their health insurance fund or insurance company prior to admission. If the cost coverage has not been clarified or parents pay directly for the hospitalisation, the University Children's Hospital Basel requires a deposit or an advance payment.

Normally, the hospitalisation is paid for by the health insurance or disability insurance. The use of the telephone and any additional meals for the parents will be charged directly to the family by the UKBB.

For treatments at the expense of a Swiss insurer, you will receive a copy of the invoice for your records. The copy of the invoice will be sent to Swisscom Health - either by e-mail or by post. You can simply download or keep a copy of the invoice in accordance with the instructions.

If you have any questions about insurance or financing your child's hospital stay, parents can contact the inpatient admissions office (T +41 61 704 15 09/10) or the social counselling service (T +41 61 704 12 38). Parents are informed in detail either by the doctors or by the responsible carer about the planned discharge date, necessary formalities and any follow-up checks. If required, they will also receive information sheets with details about care in the first few days after discharge. If parents pick up their child in their own car, an adult who can look after the child should travel with them in addition to the driver.
