Rooming-in on the neonatology ward

This page has been translated automatically.

Your child is now in a stable general condition. However, there are still reasons why your child cannot yet be discharged home. Perhaps your child is not yet drinking enough, is receiving medication or is unable to maintain their body temperature on their own.

Before you can go home with your child, we would like to give you the opportunity to get to know them better in the rooming-in area of the ward, to feel their sleep rhythm and experience their waking phases.

What does rooming-in mean?

Rooming-in means that you can look after your child around the clock. We provide you with a single room free of charge, where you can be with your child around the clock and also stay overnight. The room is only intended for one parent, but you are welcome to take turns.

It is important that you feel physically able to care for your child after the birth. You are welcome to stay at home for a few hours after consultation with the responsible carer. We know that there is usually a lot to do before your child is allowed to go home. In consultation with the nurse responsible for the rooming-in area and the doctors, you will determine your daily routine - depending on any appointments your child may have, such as physiotherapy or an ophthalmologist.

Your child can be connected to a monitor depending on their general condition. All values and alarms are checked. Even if you are in a deep sleep, a carer is on site to be able to react accordingly.

Absences

Please let the responsible carer know when you leave your room (to go to the toilet, shower, walks). This will enable them to keep a close eye on your child.

Doctor's consultation

Please contact the carer if you would like to speak to a doctor.

Badge

The carer will give you a badge for a deposit of CHF 20 when you enter the rooming-in area. This will allow you to use the back entrance to the toilet and shower.

Balcony

There is a balcony in front of the rooms, which you are welcome to use. Please ask the carer if you can take your child out into the fresh air. She will give you a jacket and hat for your child.

Visiting possibilities

Parents can be with their child around the clock. Visits are possible for siblings and grandparents by arrangement with the responsible carer. This is for two hours per visit, between 2 and 6 pm. Other visitors are not permitted in order to protect the families.

A maximum of three people may stay in the rooming-in area at the same time, one of whom must be a parent. Parents are responsible for the supervision of siblings.

Please do not disturb!

If you, your partner and your child would like to spend undisturbed family time together, please use the appropriate sign in your room. The nursing staff will then only disturb you if it is really necessary.

Own hygiene

There is a washbasin in the room, which you are welcome to use. There is also a shower for you in the prepartum ward. A hairdryer is available in the ward.

Entrance to the rooming-in area

Both you and your visitor should use the main entrance to the ward to enter the rooming-in area.

Dismissal

If you are due to be discharged, we would ask you to plan this for 11.00 am. If you cannot be collected by this time, you can use the parents' room.

Drinks

We provide you with water (water dispenser at the entrance to the centre) and tea. You will find a water purifier at the service point.

Midwifery care

When you stay overnight as a mother in the rooming-in room, you are already discharged from the maternity clinic. Like every woman who has recently given birth, you are entitled to midwife care. Your midwife is welcome to visit you at our clinic. Please let us know. The midwife is responsible for your health, the care of your child is the responsibility of the neonatology department.

Heating

You are welcome to regulate the temperature in the room according to your needs. Please note that the ideal sleeping temperature for your child is between 18 and 20°C. In summer, the room can be cooled with a water cooler. Please ask the nurse in charge if you would like to regulate the temperature.

Hygiene articles

Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with hygiene articles in the neonatology department. Please bring these with you.

Hygiene in the room / room rules

You are responsible for keeping your room tidy. The room cleaner comes every morning and cleans your room. Please tidy it beforehand to make her work easier.

Airing the room

You are welcome to air the room. To avoid draughts, please close the room door.

Medication

You will receive the medication for your child from the carer. They will show you how to administer them.

Monitoring

If your child is still connected to the monitor, their vital signs are monitored continuously. All values are monitored centrally at the care centre.

Food for the child

If you are not breastfeeding, you can obtain formula for your child from the nurse in charge. You can heat the formula in your room in the bottle warmer provided. For safety reasons, the fridge with the formula is reserved for the nursing staff.

Foodstuffs

You are welcome to bring your own food, for which we will provide you with an appropriate box in the fridge. Please take all food back with you after discharge. You will find crockery etc. in the drawers at the service point. You are welcome to use the microwave to heat up your food. Used crockery can be returned to the service point after use. Please do not leave any food on the balcony as this attracts pigeons.

Carer

The carer responsible for the four rooming-in rooms will inform you about your child's state of health. They will give you tips for the time after hospitalisation and will be available to answer any questions you may have. You as parents are responsible for caring for your child. You can decide when you want to change your child's nappy or bathe them, for example. We are happy to support you.

Smoking ban

Smoking is prohibited throughout the ward, in the wet areas and on the balcony. The rooms are all connected to the USB smoke detection system.

Cupboard

You will find a cupboard for your clothes next to the cupboard for patient laundry.

Steriliser

You are welcome to sterilise your private teats, dummies and bottles in the microwave. Please ask the nurse to give you the steriliser.

Visit

Medical and nursing rounds take place daily around midday at the base. You are welcome to ask about the results after the ward round.

WC

The toilet is located in front of the ward on the prepartum ward. Please do not forget your badge when you go to the toilet. Fathers please use the toilet next to the main entrance.

Change of linen

Our care assistants will provide you with new bed linen once a week or as required. You will find towels in the wardrobe.

Changing table

You can care for your child on the changing table. You will find the appropriate materials in the drawers. Please ask the responsible carer to show you how the heat lamp works. Never leave your child unattended on the changing table.
