Prof Raphael Guzman is Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at the University Children's Hospital Basel (UKBB). He has held the Chair of Paediatric Neurosurgery since 2011.

Career

Following his medical and neurosurgical training at the University of Bern, Prof Raphael Guzman completed his clinical training in paediatric neurosurgery at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University in the USA and at Hôpital Necker in Paris. From 2007 to 2012, he worked as Chief of Paediatric Neurosurgery at Lucile Packard's Hospital in California. He has been Head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at the UKBB since January 2012.

Main research areas

In his clinical research, Prof Raphael Guzman has focused primarily on the surgical treatment of complex cerebrovascular diseases in children. His experimental research investigates possible stem cell therapies for regeneration after brain and spinal cord injuries.

Expertise

Prof. Raphael Guzman has extensive expertise in paediatric vascular diseases, paediatric brain tumours, spinal malformations and complex cranial malformations, including craniosynostosis. He is also involved in the neuroendoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus, the surgical treatment of epilepsy in children and the surgical treatment of paediatric spinal cord tumours.

Prof Raphael Guzman is the father of two children and an internationally renowned paediatric neurosurgeon. He is now passing on his unique experience to the staff at the UKBB, which will of course benefit our young and precious patients in particular.
