Medical Genetics | Consultation hours

Medical genetics deals with the causes, diagnosis and risk assessment of congenital diseases before and after birth. In collaboration with consultants from medical practices and the University Hospital Basel the UKBB offers a genetics consultation for children and adolescents.

Focal points:

• Survey of your own health history (anamnesis) and that of family members (family tree)
• Physical examination if necessary
• Information on general genetic risks and an assessment of the specific risk
• Comprehensive information about the underlying developmental disorder, malformation or disease
• Information on the possibilities, limits and risks of prenatal diagnostics if you wish to have children or are already pregnant
• Where necessary or possible, blood samples are taken for further genetic laboratory diagnostics

Laboratory diagnostics

The diagnostic laboratory is authorised by the Federal Office of Public Health to use the latest molecular and cytogenetic methods. FAMH laboratory managers supervise comprehensive pre- and postnatal chromosome analyses as well as those for myelo- and lymphoproliferative diseases. DNA examinations are offered for numerous diseases and especially familial cancer predispositions or referred to other specialised laboratories.
