The general aim of clinical pharmacy is to develop and promote the appropriate, safe and economically sensible use of medicinal products. This includes both Process-orientated activities as well as patient-orientated activities, in interdisciplinary cooperation with doctors and nursing staffAs a primarily preventive discipline, clinical pharmacy is primarily concerned with topics such as before the administration of medication in the individual wards and specialist departments.

Tasks

At the UKBB, Clinical Pharmacy is a spin-off of the research department for Clinical pharmacology also deal intensively with issues relating to the effects and side effects of medications to Administration, i.e. within the body. By means of "Pharmacometrics", these pharmacological processes can be quantitatively described (mathematically/statistically modelled) and predicted using computer simulations. This is particularly important in the context of Research projects.

The supply of medicines to the UKBB is ensured externally by the Hospital Pharmacy of the University Hospital Basel (USB). The UKBB's Clinical Pharmacy department liaises closely with the Clinical Pharmacy of the USB for the utilisation of synergies, e.g. for the central publication of UKBB-relevant Drug information.

Range of services

  • Process-orientated activities: such as participation in commissions and working groups, ongoing medication projects (e.g. implementation of the electronic drug regulation), preparation of drug information, standards
  • Patient-orientated activities: such as internal counselling on drug therapy (e.g. drug interactions, therapeutic drug monitoring, dose adjustment for liver/renal insufficiency, drug therapy during pregnancy/breastfeeding), interdisciplinary ward round support
  • Training and further education: Supervision of Master's theses

Research

  • Research into pharmacological processes and optimisation of pharmacotherapies, primarily in children, using mathematical-statistical computer models (pharmacometrics) Publications on PubMed
  • National/international consulting activities in the field of developmental pharmacology, pharmacometrics and planning of studies with drugs: SwissPedPha, SwissPedNet/SwissPedDose, European paediatric clinical research network conect4children (c4c)
  • Ongoing quality study: Interdisciplinary development of a systematic monitoring programme to improve drug therapy safety in a paediatric clinic.

Characteristics and goals

Clinical Pharmacy: aims to develop and promote the rational use of medication. As a primarily preventive discipline, it is primarily concerned with issues prior to the administration of medication.
Clinical pharmacology: aims to promote and deepen the understanding of drug therapies, especially with regard to physiological processes in the body (pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics), i.e. after the administration of drugs.
Pharmacometrics: aims to quantify drug effects, disease progression and study data using mathematical-statistical modelling/simulation to support decisions in drug development and use.
