Visit & overnight stay

Visiting possibilities

Parents can stay with their child around the clock. In most departments, one parent can stay overnight in the child's room if they wish.

For the benefit of the patients, further visits are possible to a limited extent from 1.30 pm to 7.00 pm. In principle, the following visiting rules apply:

  • Emergencies and appointments: Maximum of two accompanying persons
  • Patient room: Maximum of three visitors per patient at the same time

Please note that children also count as visitors and that special visiting rules apply in certain areas. Exceptions are possible in certain situations and after consultation with the relevant staff.

1 adult can be present in the recovery room at any one time. It is possible to take turns if necessary.

Visits are only possible for parents, grandparents and healthy siblings (maximum 2 visitors at the same time). Parents can be with their child at any time. For grandparents and siblings, visiting hours are from 1.30 pm to 7 pm.

Other visiting options are to be arranged individually with the responsible staff.

As parents, you and your siblings are always welcome. Please make sure that your children are healthy.

You are welcome to give us the names of 6 people who may accompany you as parents during your stay in the neonatology department. These can be grandparents, friends or godparents. You may visit your baby in the presence of a parent from 1.00 pm to 7.00 pm.

As we have limited space and our premature babies need a lot of protection, a maximum of 2 people are allowed per patient (3 people in rooming-in). Please make your accompanying persons aware of the hygiene and admission rules. You are welcome to contact us so that we can explain these to you.

To ensure that you have easy access to the neonatology department at all times, you can obtain two passes for a rental fee of CHF 40 per pair. With these passes you can open the door next to the main entrance of the University Hospital (Spitalstrasse 22), the door of the Polyclinic and the main entrance door of the Neonatology Department. The door openers are located to the left of each door. You can obtain the passes from the nurse in charge. You will of course be refunded the hire fee when you return them.

Maximum of 3 visitors at the same time. Visiting hours are from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. (parents until 9 p.m.). Visits are not possible during therapy and meal times.

Visits must be arranged individually with the responsible staff.

Visitors must not be ill themselves. This means, for example, that they must be free of coughs, fever, sore throats and earaches, colds, cold sores, eye infections, vomiting and diarrhoea.

If the parents are ill, the best solution for the patient is sought in consultation with the nursing staff.

A maximum of 2 adults may accompany a child to the day clinic. Unfortunately, siblings cannot attend the day clinic.

Overnight stay for parents

It has been proven that the proximity of parents to their sick child has a positive influence on the healing process. For this reason, the UKBB offers the possibility for a parent to stay overnight in the child's room free of charge.

For longer stays, parents, siblings and close relatives can, on the recommendation of the UKBB, be accommodated in the designated Parents' home of the Ronald McDonald Foundation stay overnight. The nursing staff and doctors will be happy to assist interested parties in reserving a room.

Interesting facts about our patient rooms

The UKBB has a total of 100 patient beds in the paediatric hospital on Spitalstrasse and in the department for premature babies in the women's clinic.

Patients are accommodated in rooms that are suitable for single or double occupancy. Children with private insurance are accommodated alone wherever possible. Sometimes there are also compelling medical reasons for single accommodation.

All rooms face the inner courtyard and are equipped with two beds and a bathroom.
