Clinical Biomechanics: Pediatric Orthopedics and Musculoskeletal Modeling | Heide Elke Viehweger

Understanding Biomechanics in Human Motion

Our primary research focus is to understand the biomechanics of normal and pathological human motion, particularly gait. We utilize computerized movement analysis to enhance the understanding of human locomotion for physicians, physiotherapists, biomechanists, and scientists.

Advanced Biomechanics Lab Equipment

The UKBB features a state-of-the-art movement analysis laboratory equipped with:

  • Vicon Motion Capture System: 18 cameras for precise movement tracking
  • Force Plates (Kistler): Four plates to measure ground reaction forces
  • Foot Pressure Measurement (Novel): A specialized plate for foot pressure analysis
  • Surface Electromyography (Noraxon): A 16-channel system to assess muscle activity
  • High-Speed Video Cameras (Basler): Two cameras for detailed motion capture

With this equipment, we measure key biomechanical parameters to answer important scientific questions. Our analyses include three-dimensional measurements such as joint angles (kinematics), joint moments and powers (kinetics), temporospatial metrics, center of mass, center of pressure, and muscle activation patterns. We use software like MATLAB and specialized modeling tools (AnyBody and OpenSim) for inverse dynamics simulations. Finite element analysis is performed using ANSYS software to calculate parameters like stress, strain, and deformations, including a special foot model for assessing foot deformities. This innovative software is integrated into our daily clinical practice.

Biomechanics in Pediatric Neuro-Orthopaedics

Additionally, our research examines clinical outcomes in pediatric neuro-orthopaedics. This involves:

  • Assessing gait deformities and their correction through orthotic or surgical interventions.
  • Evaluating specific surgical or orthotic techniques in populations such as those with cerebral palsy.
  • Addressing challenges beyond gait, such as hip dislocation.
