Admittance & Registration

The UKBB places great value on making our patients feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. A pleasant atmosphere, friendliness and accessible information all contribute to this. Prior to their child’s hospital admittance, parents will receive a letter via post confirming the date of admittance, and providing necessary information on admittance procedures for their child. At the time of admittance, please bring this letter, all required documentation (as detailed in the letter), and eating utensils for your child.

Insurance & Costs

Clarifying insurance issues in advance

Please keep in mind that you will need to discuss the allocation of costs with your health insurance provider prior to your child’s hospital stay, except in emergency cases. In the case that cost-allocation is not previously arranged, or parents are paying out-of-pocket, the UKBB will require a deposit or advance payment. Please bring confirmation from your insurance provider at the time of admittance.

Which insurance providers will cover hospitalisation costs?

The insurance providers that will cover the costs of your child's hospital stay will depend on individual circumstances related to the illness, accident, or congenital disease, etc. requiring hospitalisation. The UKBB recommends taking out private prenatal insurance.
Typically, insurance providers only cover the costs of treatment and care of your child while in hospital. Costs incurred by the parents related to travel to and from the hospital, or overnight stays, will not be covered.

Financing

The parents of children who are uninsured or inadequately insured – as well as persons residing abroad – will need to make an advance payment. Please contact the Inpatient Admission Office (T +41 61 704 15 09/10) or the Social Counselling Service (T+ 41 61 704 12 38) with questions related to insurance and financing of your child’s hospital stay.

UKBB Costs

Parents will be charged for services not covered by the health insurance provider, according to the UKBB price list.  The parents of children, who do not have a Swiss insurance provider, will be liable to pay related costs for their child’s hospital stay.  The UKBB price list can be found here.

Preparation for Hospital Stay

Information events

The Universitäts-Kinderspital beider Basel (UKBB) holds information events in preparation for your child’s hospital stay. This friendly and engaging introduction allows children the opportunity to overcome their fears and anxieties about their stay. Parents are also given the opportunity to ask any questions about their child’s care or administrative issues.

These information afternoons are aimed at children 4 years of age and older. Those taking part must not have any communicable diseases at the time of attendance. Further information is available from the Hospital Education Service at telephone number: +41 61 704 25 40.

Preparatory visits

The Universitäts-Kinderspital beider Basel (UKBB) offers a preparatory visit to children who will be admitted to UKBB for treatment and care. As with the information afternoon, this provides children with another opportunity to ease any fears or anxieties they may have. Parents are again offered the opportunity to ask questions related to their child’s stay.

These preparatory visits are aimed at children 4 years of age and older, and are offered when required. Further information is available from the Hospital Education Service at telephone number: +41 601 704 25 39.

Tours of the hospital for school classes and kindergartens

Illness and hospitals are educational themes for children and adolescents. To this aim, UKBB educators provide education on illness and hospitals through educational tours of the Children’s Hospital. Participants gain insight into the day-to-day workings of the hospital and staff, and are afforded the opportunity to ask questions.  Hospital tours take place every Thursday afternoon from 2.15 pm to 3.45 pm.

For more information or to organize a tour, interested kindergartens and school teachers should contact the Hospital Education Service at: T +41 61 704 25 39.

Hospital suitcase for teaching

Upon request, the Verband Kind und Spital (Child and Hospital Association) has a suitcase available containing hospital equipment suitable for addressing the theme of "illness and hospitals" for children in kindergarten and primary school. The suitcase contains surgical gowns, dressing material and syringes, along with books and games on medical themes and other teaching material. The hospital suitcase can be borrowed for a maximum of four weeks at a time. There is no charge for this in the Basel region; the kindergartens and schools only pay for the postage if dispatch by mail is desired.
