Patients at UKBB are accommodated either
on an outpatient or inpatient basis. Outpatient and day-clinic surgery is when
children or adolescents are admitted into the hospital in the morning of the
operation and return home in the evening.
An inpatient stay is required for major
operations, following which the patient has to stay at least overnight or
several days in the hospital. Specially trained children's doctors, nursing
staff and therapists take care of the hospitalised children and adolescents
round the clock.
Parents are free to visit their child throughout the entire day. In most departments, a parent can – upon request – stay overnight in the child's room.
The patients' meals and milk bottles are delivered to their rooms. Various catering facilities are available for visitors and relatives. These range from fresh meals in the Bistro Nemo to snack machines on every floor.
There are numerous
possibilities for patients and their siblings to spend their time while at the UKBB.
The staff in this unit supports the parents during their child's stay in the hospital.
The rights and obligations of patients at the UKBB are governed by the
laws of the Basel-City Canton. In its activity, the Children's Hospital
also conforms to the requirements laid down in the Charter for
Children's Rights in Hospital (the EACH Charter).
