Perinatal centre

The Basel Perinatal Centre is managed on an equal footing by the two medical directors of neonatology at UKBB and the gynaecological clinic on the USB. The care of pregnant women and newborns is based on the credo of guaranteeing competent and humane treatment for all patients. In addition to these two disciplines, a large number of specialists from both hospitals are involved in the perinatal centre.

If a newborn needs an operation, the specialists at the Paediatric surgery and Neurosurgery at the UKBB in a timely manner. The long-term care of extremely premature babies and newborns with complex neurological disorders is guaranteed by the Neuro-, developmental paediatrics & rehabilitation ensured. Children with cardiac malformations requiring surgery are treated by the Paediatric heart specialists Both before and after the birth of the baby, in order to enable the optimal place of birth and treatment plan.

Formerly newborn babies who have to stay in hospital beyond infancy due to complex chronic illnesses are treated in the Department for Intensive care medicine and Pneumology with which there is close cooperation. In addition, all other medical and surgical functional areas in the UKBB and USB are involved in the perinatal centre, depending on the problem.

The Basel Perinatal Centre is the only university centre of its kind in north-western Switzerland and brings together a large number of specialists at a single location. This means that pregnant women and newborns can receive complex services of the highest level of care in one place and receive optimal care.
