UKBB opens remodelled polyclinic and a new department

Since the University Children's Hospital Basel (UKBB) moved into the new building on Spitalstrasse in 2011, the number of outpatient consultations in the outpatient clinic has risen by 1 to 2 per cent annually in all areas. This trend is expected to continue in the coming years. In order to create the necessary space for outpatient consultations and treatments in the existing floor space, the UKBB has remodelled its outpatient clinic without interrupting operations. The reopening is scheduled for the beginning of September 2024 after around four months of renovation work.

The remodelling will improve patient flow in the outpatient area and also enable the addition of a further outpatient service. Previously, paediatric patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) received inpatient care at UKBB, while outpatient care was provided at the University Hospital Basel. These patients and the treatment team now benefit from an improved process, as all outpatient and inpatient care is offered under one roof.

The extended outpatient service comprises around 2000 consultations per year in interdisciplinary consultations with speech therapy, paediatric ENT and orthodontics for the optimal treatment of congenital malformations in the mouth, jaw and facial area, as well as an interdisciplinary consultation with the maxillofacial clinic and paediatric neurosurgery for children with head deformities and for treatment with head prostheses.

The newly created Department of Craniofacial Surgery is headed by Prof. Dr mult. Andreas Müller and Prof. Dr Raphael Guzman. This department will create a comprehensive cleft and craniofacial centre at the UKBB, which will combine the specific services of paediatric neurosurgery and the existing University Centre for Cleft Lip and Palate and Facial Malformations for anomalies in the head area.

Invitation to the information event

UKBB is holding an information event for UKBB employees and interested media representatives on 9 September 2024 in the auditorium from 5 p.m., followed by an aperitif riche.

The presentations will give you an understanding of the background and challenges of this major project. You will learn about the improvements that can be achieved with the remodelling and the extent to which UKBB patients will benefit from it. And you will gain a lively insight into how the specialists are working together in an interdisciplinary team to help children with cleft lip and palate as well as facial and cranial malformations to achieve impressive results.
